The Arctic Council Celebrates its 25th Anniversary
On September 19th, 1996 the Ottawa Declaration was signed by all eight states with territories north of the Arctic Circle, creating the Arctic Council. Over the past 25 years the Arctic Council has grown in its capacity and in its influence, producing three legally binding agreements, 10 declarations, and countless reports from its six working groups and network of experts. It has also been essential in creating the University of the Arctic, the Arctic Economic Council, the Arctic Coast Guard Forum, and many other cooperation mechanisms.
This video features commentary from a host of key figures throughout the Arctic Council’s history, reflecting on past achievements and the potential future of the Arctic’s premier forum for international cooperation.
Arctic Council Reykjavik Ministerial Opening Press Conference
On May 20th, 2021, the foreign ministers of all eight Arctic nations and representatives of the six permanent participants gathered in Reykjavik, Iceland, to mark the end of the Icelandic chairmanship of the Arctic Council and to hand over the chairmanship to the Russian Federation. In this press conference, Icelandic Foreign Minister Gudlaugur Thór Thórdarson and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov address past and future Arctic Council work and the state of Arctic relations.
This is a short film about how Svalbard, the northernmost European Arctic territory, became increasingly linked to developments in climate science and climate change over the course of recent history.
In the words of director Temujin Duran, “It is brief for a subject so large, and lacks the detail of key facts and figures that would provide a much better understanding of the current consensus on climate. Then again, you may perhaps feel it has too many numbers already. It is my hope that regardless of what you make of the content, you will find it beautiful to watch.”

The late Richard Beneville, mayor of Nome, Alaska, sat down with ArcticToday publisher Alice Rogoff on the sidelines of the 2018 Arctic Circle Assembly in Reykjavik, Iceland last month to deliver a message of hope and youth empowerment.
